You might want to think twice before cooking any ready-to-eat breakfast meat that was purchased from Walmart in recent months. More than 6,444 pounds of turkey and pork sausage patties have been recalled over possible salmonella contamination.

According to the USDA, consumers should check their freezers and fridges for the following recalled products that were manufactured by Tennessee-based George’s Prepared Foods and sold under Walmart’s Great Value store brand:

  • 24.92-ounce packages containing “Great Value Fully Cooked Original Pork Sausage Patties” with a use-by date of 10/16/19 and lot code 1091971894.

The affected packages also have EST. M2206T or P-2260T printed on them.

Although no confirmed reports of illnesses have been verified resulting from the consumption of the recalled meat, consumers who possess these products are urged to throw them away or return them to Walmart for a refund.

Salmonella poisoning is a common foodborne illness that causes symptoms like diarrhea, fever and cramps within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. While most people recover from salmonella bacteria poisoning, the illness still causes a reported 400 deaths each year in the United States. People with weakened immune systems, children, infants, pregnant women and elderly people are especially at risk.

This recall is just one of many food recalls that have hit Walmart in 2019. Earlier this year, the big-box store was also affected by a recall on beef, pork and veal due to the risk of E. coli contamination. Hot dog buns, infant formula, ointments and eye drops sold at Walmart have also been issued recall alerts this year over safety concerns.
