BAKERSFIELD, Ca. — Fred Smith has been the head athletic trainer at Bakersfield College for 35 years, but on Monday, he walked off campus for the last time with that title.
Smith leaves behind a positive attitude that has trickled down to his colleagues, athletes and coaches. He will be remembered for his experience and the energy he brought to the job every day.
"Injuries are not a fun thing but when they have it, we want them to hopefully come out of here with a smile on their face," Smith said about his job.
And, even on his last day of working as an athletic trainer at BC he was still sharing those smiles as he recalled his favorite moments on the job.
"Some young athletes haven’t come from a great background and it’s nice to come in and talk to someone who is positive and encouraging, so that’s one of the big things," Smith shared.
Over three decades of taking care of the Renegade athletes won't be am easy thing to leave but Fred knows he'll still be around on campus.
"I will still come up and the see the athletes because I enjoy this place," Smith said.
And the college sure enjoyed him.
