BAKERSFIELD, CA. — Classical music now emanates from the Rite Aid in downtown Bakersfield. The major retailer is using the tunes as a tactic to fight panhandlers and loitering.
In a statement to 23ABC, a spokesperson with Rite Aid said, "The playing of classical music is a test in certain California stores - based on customer feedback - to discourage panhandling and loitering and provide a more comfortable shopping experience for our customers."
Rite Aid shoppers told 23ABC that they enjoy the new classical music and it provides a soothing experience.
On Friday, there were still people congregating and loitering outside of the store, however, shoppers said it was less than usual.
