BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Hundreds of local students got a new backpack and some supplies for the new school year Friday, courtesy of local organizations.

The families excited and very grateful for the event, with one family telling 23ABC there are no words to describe how events like this help them out.

The Vineland School District held the drive at Sunset Middle School.

The district was able to distribute 700 backpacks filled with school supplies, dental hygiene kits, and food to students and families for free.

The drive made possible thanks to the generous donations from United Way of Kern County, Aera Energy, and the Blessing Corner Church. Americorp also helped distribute the backpacks and Assemblyman Rudy Salas attended.

The event was drive-up only and required anyone coming to wear a mask.
