A Veteran's Voice: J's Garden Works

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Jose Valenzuela didn't serve in the military. He doesn't have any relatives who served. And yet this Bakersfield businessman is driven by the desire to do something for Veterans, as a thank you for a country that's done so much for him.

Jose started his landscaping business out of his parent's garage in 1991 while he was still in high school. He said it gives him the unique opportunity to change someone's life. "You finish and people see the finshed product and you get that smile" said Valenzuela.

A smile. Simple, uncomplicated, just like Jose's view on America. "I'm an immigrant, I understand this country and I owe a lot to them."

It's that sense of national pride that has Jose wanting to give back. J's Garden Works wants to provide a local veteran with a landscaping makeover each month. Jose's crew will clean out dead brush, trim bushes, plant a few trees, all in a mission to make Vet's believe that someone out there cares about them. And his crew volunteered to help make this dream a reality.

It's a project that might bring a smile, and a sense of pride, to a local veteran each month.
