LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who walked toward them with a machete Monday morning, authorities said.

Deputies answered a call shortly after 6:30 a.m. about a man with a machete trying to assault employees at a business in the unincorporated Florence area, authorities said.

Arriving deputies were told the man had walked down the street. They found a 40-year-old man sitting in a pickup truck, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Department.

The man punched and kicked two deputies who contacted him before grabbing a machete and swinging it as he walked toward them. The deputies used less-lethal weapons on the man but he kept advancing and was finally shot and killed at the scene, the Sheriff's Department said.

His name wasn't immediately released.

The deputies who were punched and kicked received minor injuries.
