It's been more than a month since massive earthquakes rocked the towns of Ridgecrest and Trona. And now Kern County Congressman and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is lending his support to get the areas designated as disaster areas.
The first of thousands of earthquakes to shake the area was 6.4 on July 4th. That was followed the next day by a 7.1. The quakes caused damage in the region including extensive damage at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. The quakes even led to the death of a man in Nevada.
Now McCarthy is lending his support to the state and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services asking the United States Small Business Administration to declare Kern and San Bernardino Counties as disaster areas.
In a statement McCarthy said "this designation will make homeowners and businesses eligible for assistance to help repair physical damage to homes or businesses." He went on to say "I call on SBA Acting Administrator Chris Pilkerton to expeditiously approve the state of California's request."
