Tehachapi residents are outraged Thursday morning after 23 trees were found cut down on the high school's campus.

Residents are expressing their frustration over social media and that students cut down the trees as part of a school prank.

According to the Tehachapi Police Department, officers were called to campus early Thursday morning regarding a report of vandalism. School officials say they arrived on campus and found 23 trees had been cut down inside the school grounds overnight. The cost of the damage is estimated to be several thousand dollars.

Scott Heitman, Tehachapi High School's principal, says one of the trees cut down was planted in memory of Cody Hardenbrook, a former student who died in a motorcycle accident in 2004.

TPD is currently investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to contact the department at 661-822-2222.
