Sisters survive domestic violence, speak out

Sisters survive domestic violence, speak out

It’s a month dedicated to the victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

Those wearing the color purple today sent a message hoping violence against women and young girls can come to an end.

October is a time to be vigilant and bring awareness to domestic violence. But the journey to freedom isn't always that easy.

Which is why Bakersfield resident Irene Leal and her sisters created “i am Woman” an organization dedicated to spreading awareness about domestic abuse and a platform they could use to share their own story.

"I had no idea that there were other people going through what i went through,” said Leal.

Leal and her two sisters, Frankie and Tommi are turning their pain into purpose.

Leal says the only way to truly let go of someone who hurt you is to forgive your abuser and then yourself.

Next month the sisters and their I am woman movement will be holding a class on domestic abuse right here in Kern County
