Search continues for 11-year-old girl and several others missing in Kern River

Officials confirm Monday that the 11-year-old girl missing in the Kern River is a Kern County resident.

Crews, calling her search, "a body recovery" after she was swept away in the Kern River near the Keyesville area Saturday morning.

According to KCSO, around 10:40 a.m. on June 22, deputies were called out to the Keyesville area of the Kern River for a report of a teenage boy and a young girl, in the water.

KCSO says the teenage boy made it out of the river safely, but the 11-year-old girl was swept downstream.

There are currently several others missing in the Kern River, according to officials -- two teenagers in Kern County and at least three people in Tulare County.

Statistics provided by KCSO show that 96 people have died in the Kern River within Kern County. Of those, 39 are from out of town and 52 are local.

KCSO said they were not able to locate the hometowns for six of those fatalities.

The searches have been paused for the evening and will continue Tuesday morning.
