KERN COUNTY, Calif. — The Delano Police Department held a back to school backpack drive this week and today, they'll deliver those backpacks to students around town. The department has partnered with the Starbucks in Delano.

All week they've gathered supplies like binders, notebooks, pens and pencils and packed them into backpacks for kids. Today they'll travel to schools throughout the Delano Unified School District and drop off the backpacks.

Saturday a local non-profit will be hosting Shoes for School event. This week organizers got together to help collect more than 500 pairs of shoes to donate to low-income families.

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. families can stop by Williams Elementary School and pick up a free pair. Kids will also have the chance to get free haircuts, participate in raffles, and score some other back to school supplies.

Also happening Saturday a backpack giveaway will be taking place to honor the legacy of local businessman Jose Arredondo.

The family has asked for donations of school supplies and backpacks to give to local students. The Arredondo family says Jose loved to give back to the community and they plan to continue this.

The backpacks will be given away from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Acura dealership on 4625 Wible Road. Anyone is welcome to stop by and pick up a backpack. You may also donate a backpack and supplies.
