One program is trying to get the community to come together in discussing themes in a book that relate to Kern County.
"One Book, One Bakersfield" select a book each year for participants to read and then reflect on.
This year, the book is "International Bank of Bob" by Bob Harris.
It's about a journalist who travels on assignment to review the world's most luxurious restaurants.
Along the way, he notices that most of the luxury is built by immigrants and laborers.
The goal of the event is to related the story to Kern County.
This is the 13th year the program sparked conversations within the community.
