BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — This month, a local grocery chain is making it easy for customers to help a local family in need.

Grocery Outlet is currently taking part in the "Independence from Hunger" campaign. Customers can donate $5 or more throughout July, and the proceeds will be used to buy a bag of food for local families in need. In return, customers receive a $5 coupon off their next purchase of $25 or more.

Donations can be given with in-store purchases or while shopping online. The donations will go to The Mission at Kern County and the local Salvation Army.

There are two Grocery Outlet locations here in Bakersfield: one at 6421 Ming Avenue and the other at 11200 Brimhall Road. You can also donate directly at the Grocery Outlet website, with those donations going to the Alameda County Food Bank.

The 2018 campaign raised more than $1.7 million, and this year's goal has been set at $2 million.
