On November 15, Kern County Supervisors appointed Assistant County Counsel Mark Nations as Interim County Counsel to replace Theresa Goldner, who resigned as County Counsel on November 4.
Nations had served as Assistant County Counsel since 2014 after serving 10 years as Chief Deputy County Counsel. He joined the Kern County Counsel's Office in 1985 after working for four years as a civil attorney in private practice with emphasis on tort defense.
In his tenure at the County, Nations has engaged in general liability defense work in state and federal courts including civil rights litigation and appellate practice. Nations also advises County departments and the Board of Supervisors on public records, claims and liability issues.
As Interim County Counsel, Nations will supervise a staff of 28 attorneys. The Office of County Counsel provides legal representation to the County of Kern and its elected officials and employees in civil proceedings, contractual agreements, and other civil legal matters.
Nations earned a Juris Doctor degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and he also holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University.
