Kern County Fire Department fought brush fire near the National Cemetery

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Kern County Fire Department fought a brush fire just south of Highway 58 near the National Cemetery on Friday.

According to the Kern County Fire Department, the started receiving calls about the fire at Hwy 58 and Hwy 223 at around 11 a.m.

"First arriving fire crews found a fire approximately 2 acres in size in light fuels being held by fire breaks. However, wind conditions caused the fire to jump the fire break and start spreading up the hillside from the freeway frontage road. Favorable weather conditions, combined with an aggressive attack by ground and air resources, kept the fire to approximately 40 acres."

In addition to fire crews, 4 air tankers and 2 helicopters were also used to battle the blaze.

"Fire crews will remain on scene through the night to strengthen containment lines and mop up hot spots. The cause of this fire is under investigation. There were no injuries reported by civilians or firefighters."
