Kern County Board of Supervisors look to suspend closure of Taft prison

Earlier this month federal officials declared they would be closing the Taft Correctional Institution but with the help of local Congressman and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, those plans have been suspended. That move was announced on Friday by McCarthy and the Department of Justice.

Tuesday the Board of Supervisors will discuss an immediate suspension of activities to de-activate the prison.

McCarthy announced Friday that he will be meeting with Attorney General William Barr to discuss why actions to deactivate the prison were taken in the first place. Officials have said they were closing it because it needed more than $100 million in repairs -- money they didn't have.

The discussion will take place this afternoon at 2 p.m.
