An accident on Highway 58 eastbound near Union Ave. Friday evening caused one death and the roadway to be shut down in both directions, according to KCSO.
Highway 58 was partially closed westbound and shut down completely eastbound. Traffic was being directed off at Union Ave. As of 10 p.m., only one EB lane was open and all WB lanes were open.
One vehicle struck another vehicle passing by, causing the suspect vehicle to catch on fire. The suspect drove the wrong way onto Highway 58 eastbound with headlights off.
One death was reported. The driver of the suspect vehicle was pinned in the car and died on scene. The passenger in the suspect vehicle was rescued and taken to the hospital with major injuries.
The driver of the victim vehicle was also taken to the hospital with major injuries, according to KCSO,
Earlier reports from KCSO on the incident said the pursuit and accident were related to a Lamont robbery suspect that left two men dead, however KCSO later retracted the initial report and said they are two separate incidents. The suspect in the vehicle was a suspect in a separate Lamont burglary that happened earlier in the week.
Responders were called to the scene around 7:35 p.m.
