BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield City Fire Department say they are investigating a fire at Mission Hotel located at 1822 M Street in Downtown Bakersfield.

BFD says they received a call for smoke coming from the basement of the hotel. When fire crews arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from all levels of the hotel. The Kern County Fire Department joined BFD crews. Chief Anthony Galagaza says there are 50 to 55 firefighters rotating through the hotel battling the flames.

"Due to the heat and due to the type of structure this is being a hotel fire we are just constantly rotating crews trying to get them rehabbed," said Chief Galagaza. "Some crews have done three to four different stints inside and they are coming out pretty beat."

The Red Cross is on scene handing out water and arson units are on scene determine its cause. BFD says they expect the intersection of M Street and 19th Street will be blocked for several hours.
