Detectives investigate the death of an inmate at the Kern County Sheriff's Office

This morning 23ABC News was alerted by the Kern County Sheriff's Office saying an inmate had died in their custody.

The sheriff's office released a statement this morning regarding the matter.  

"An inmate at the Kern County Sheriff's Office Central receiving agency was being checked on by medical staff when he suffered an apparent medical emergency. Medical staff and deputies began life saving procedures, but the inmate was pronounced deceased approximately 20 minutes later." 

Detectives are investigating this death, as is standard for all in-custody deaths. 

The sheriff's office says no foul play is suspected at this point. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause. 

The name of the inmate has not been released at this time.
