The Dolores Huerta Foundation is launching a campaign to build its Peace and Justice Multi-cultural Community Center. The proposed site is an entire square city block currently owned by Self-Help Federal Credit Union in downtown Bakersfield near the Fox Theater.

The credit union has agreed to partner with the Huerta Foundation to develop the complex.

The complex will include a comprehensive child development facility, a community organizing, and training academy, an art gallery and an outdoor amphitheater.

23ABC spoke with Huerta Wednesday and she says she hopes it will add to the culture of downtown.

"We know that in many communities the downtown kind of disappears. But we have a very vibrant downtown here in Bakersfield. And we want to contribute to that. We hope that this building will make it happen."

The current foundation offices are housed in a 100-plus-year-old building which restricts the DHF's ability to provide training to staff and community members.
