BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- — The two siblings fatally shot in a Central Bakersfield apartment complex early Monday morning were being honored by residents Tuesday.
"If you needed anything, you can go to him or his sister and ask them for anything," Erickia Holmes said. "They will literally give you the shirt off their back."
Officials say 20-year-old Carlos Abraham and his 34-year-old sister Louise Abraham were shot shortly before 1 a.m. Monday and died on scene.
The suspect, 39-year-old Morris Gilmente, is the father of Louise's children. He was arrested by Bakersfield police after fleeing from police and crashing near Highway 178 and Oswell Street.
On Tuesday, several residents gathered near the crime scene in remembrance of the victims.
Ashley Burgess, the siblings neighbor, were among others who tried to save their life following the shooting.
"We did the best we can to save them or revive them, but there was not much we can do," Burgess said.
Holmes and several other residents said Carlos always engaged with the community's children.
"The most impact he has around here is the things he did with the kids," Holmes said. "There would be days where I didn't feel good and the kids would want to swim ... he would take the initiative and come out and make sure everyone can play."
Another candlelit vigil will be held Tuesday evening at the Santa Fe Apartments off Union Avenue, according to residents.
