SHAFTER, Calif. — Shafter City Council will discuss adding the national motto 'In God We Trust' to Shafter police vehicles at a city council meeting on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 p.m.
Advocates for this motto include local religious leaders, like Pastor David Vivas Jr. at World Harvest International Church in Delano. However, other residents consider the proposal an infringement on the First Amendment's separation between church and state.
This potential move comes after other cities in Kern County, including Bakersfield, have considered the same addition. The City of Delano approved this adoption in April.
