On October 8, 2016 at 1:10 a.m., Nick Espinoza Castro was traveling northbound in a 2005 Ford Focus on South Union Avenue, just south of State Route 223 when he veered to the left and drove into a raised concrete center divide.

In an attempt to regain control of his vehicle, Castro made a turning movement to the right and crossed both northbound lanes, going off the roadway and crashing head on into a tree stump.

24-year-old Castro and 21-year-old Daniel Hernandez were injured in the crash and transported to Kern Medical Center. According to California Highway Patrol, 20-year-old Savannah B. McConn was not wearing her seatbelt and died from her injuries.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be a factor of the collision.
