BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — As many businesses head into round two of shutdowns across Kern County, a local salon owner has come up with an idea to help his hairstylists keep up with their rent.

"We have to get very creative to find different resources and revenue streams right now given the, you know the devastating news that we have to shut down again," said Casey Rion, owner of Salon District, Serenity Salon and Hairpros.

Casey Rion owns multiple salons in Bakersfield and is hoping to help local hair stylists pay rent as they shut down for the second time during the pandemic.

He's doing that by allowing stylists to sell these signs with "#HaircutsCANTwait."

"This is what I was going to show you real quick, the official hot off the press, '#HaircutsCANTwait,'" said Rion.

Rion says he wanted the slogan to be something that stuck with people.

"Gavin Newsom, he always says haircuts can wait and we agree that haircuts can wait so we want to acknowledge that so we don't want to be ignorant to that statement, but we want everyone else to understand that within our industry, whenever haircuts are really waiting, the effect that it's having on a lot of households," said Rion.

Rion has paid for the signs upfront and is allowing stylists to sell them once sold, the proceeds help pay the employee's rent.

And it isn't just for his salon, other salons can purchase the signs at the base rate and allow their stylists to sell them too.

"I'm hoping that if it just adds a little bit of assistance to salon owners or a little bit of sleeping easier for stylists at night knowing that I'm not going to come to them saying, 'Hey you owe me thousands of dollars' and instead 'Help me sell these signs and we're in this together' I think that approach sets a little more friendly with them and is a little more respectful," said Rion. "You know if it helps a couple of salons or a couple of stylists, it was all worth it."

The signs cost $25 each.

You can purchase one by sending the money and your address through Venmo to @haircutsCANTwait and it will be delivered to your home within 48 hours.

If you're a salon owner and want to purchase signs for your hairstylists to sell, you can contact Casey Rion through Instagram or Facebook at Salon District Studio or Serenity Salon and Spa.
