DELANO, Calif. — The city of Delano has a total of five members on its city council, and this election, three of those seats are up for grabs. The race features seven candidates total, including three incumbents.
In Delano, the mayor and the council members are elected “at large.” meaning they do not represent separate districts. Council members are elected to four-year terms.
In 2020, three council members’ terms are coming to an end: Councilmember Grace Vallejo, Mayor pro tem Joe Alindajo, and Councilmember Joe Aguirre. All three are running for reelection.
There are four other candidates running for the first time as well. Out of the seven total people in the race, the top three vote-getters are the people who will get the job.
The challengers are Carlton Lennon, who works on Delano's City Pension Committee. Salvador Solorio-Ruiz, who represents the 4th district of the Kern County Democratic Central Committee. Jaime Mendoza, who is a manager for a mortgage company, and Veronica Vasquez who is a social worker for child protective services.
23ABC asked them to provide up to a 60-second statement explaining to voters why they should vote for them. The video can be seen above.
