Sen. Kamala Harris of California will be Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.
The presumptive Democratic nominee announced Tuesday that Harris will join him on the ticket. If her and Biden win in November, she would become the first woman and African-American elected as vice president.
Biden’s selection comes after weeks of vetting several candidates for the role, all of which were women because the former vice president vowed to run alongside a female prospect.
The Biden campaign said Harris and Biden will deliver remarks from Delaware on Wednesday.
Following the announcement, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy issued the following statement (emphasis his):
The pick for the 2020 Democrat Vice Presidential nomination is more consequential than in previous years. This individual represents the future of the Democrat Party and will be their de facto presidential candidate in the fall. According to Biden’s own assessment during the primary debates, Kamala Harris is uniquely unqualified to fill that role, let alone to lead the country. I couldn’t agree more.
While serving as San Francisco district attorney and California Attorney General, Harris used her office’s prosecutorial powers for political purposes. She led assaults against conservative non-profits, energy companies, and parents, but not violent gang members or criminal illegal aliens. Now, she wants to turn America into San Francisco. As her policy stances in Washington show, she would take away private health plans, make energy more expensive, and ‘reimagine policing.’ She will not rebuild the economy, confront China, or uphold public safety.
Harris’s record would immediately disqualify her to any moderate, steady-handed candidate. But Biden is not a moderate candidate. Nor is he running on a mainstream platform. He is a Trojan Horse for the radical faction of his party. By contrast, President Trump and Congressional Republicans are offering an agenda that will help renew the American Dream, restore our way of life, and rebuild the greatest economy ever. The choice in November is clear.
The Republican Party of Orange County also issued a statement:
Today’s announcement should be clear to every American that Joe Biden is no moderate. In selecting Senator Kamala Harris, a San Francisco liberal, as his running mate he will oversee the most liberal administration in American history. We cannot let that happen.
As Californians we know intimately the lack of experience and accomplishment Kamala brings to the Democrat ticket.
In 2016 after 8 years of turmoil, the American people rejected the damage inflicted by an inexperienced less than one term Senator done to our economy and national security, electing President Trump.
Kamala Harris is not qualified to serve as Vice President of the United States or if called upon - President of the United States. Democrat primary voters made that clear just months ago and that is still true today.
As Attorney General of California she failed to prosecute dangerous criminals and oversaw an unsustainable increase in crime while targeting low income parents for school delinquency. As a United States Senator, Harris has no real accomplishments. Her political ambitions are carried on the backs of hard working Californians ravaged by her weakness on crime.
California families are less safe because of Senator Harris. Her selection all but guarantees the Democrats’ call for defunding police departments and release of 18,000 dangerous criminals in California will spread into a national nightmare.
There is no daylight between Kamala Harris and her extreme allies in Congress Gil Cisneros, Harley Rouda, Katie Porter and Mike Levin. As California Republicans we will spend the next 84 days stopping Kamala Harris from coming within a heartbeat of the presidency.
