CHICO, Calif. — A school teacher in Northern California has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a former student.

Chico police say officers began an investigation two weeks ago against Jennifer Lynn Smith, a Chico Unified School District teacher, after a former student reported to authorities that Smith had sexually abused her while she attended the school.

Detectives on Thursday arrested the 50-year-old teacher on multiple counts of sexually assaulting a minor.

It was not immediately clear if Smith has an attorney who can speak on her behalf. Police are asking anyone who may have information about the allegations to come forward.
