An accused cop killer who was found in Kern County two years ago is facing life behind bars. Paulo Mendoza has pleaded guilty to murdering Newman Police Department Corporal Ronil Singh.

According to the Associated Press, Mendoza was in the country illegally when Singh pulled him over on suspicion of a DUI on December 26th, 2018. Authorities said Mendoza then opened fire. He then ran from police before being arrested in Kern County by the sheriff's office two days later.

Singh is survived by his wife and a 2-year-old son.

"I hope the image in the car and the nightmare you have left me with stays with you, seared in your brain, just like it is in mine," said Singh's wife Anamika.

The District Attorney's office said in May it would seek his execution if he was convicted. However, he pleaded guilty to murder under a deal with county prosecutors that will spare him the death penalty.
