UPDATE (1:17 p.m.): Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood gave more details about the shooting during a press conference at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 2nd.

During the conference, Youngblood revealed that the deputies involved in the incident were Deputy Danielle Henderson and Deputy Michael Valdez. Henderson and Valdez arrived at the Sierra Vista Mobile Home Park in Rosamond after a report of a suspicious person trying to open multiple car door handles. Valdez saw a man who matched the description of the suspect. After the man tried to flee, he began shooting at Valdez.

Valdez was shot in the forehead. He was then sent to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he received several stitches before being released. Before he was transported to the hospital, Valdez called for help from the S.W.A.T. team. S.W.A.T. was able to capture the suspect.

According to Youngblood, the suspect was Edgar Rojas, 19. The suspect was carrying a ghost gun on his person. Rojas was charged with attempted murder, resisting arrest with violence, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, possession of a ghost gun, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in public, prowling, and tampering with vehicles.

Bodycam footage will be released after the Kern County Sheriff's Office finished its investigation.


A Kern County Sheriff's deputy was involved in a shooting early Friday morning after confronting an armed suspect. The suspect fled but was later taken into custody.

KCSO said an armed suspect was trying to open multiple car door handles at the Sierra Vista Mobile Home Park in Rosamond. Deputies saw a person matching the description reported in the 2900 block of Diamond Street and approached them but the suspect fled.

Deputies followed and found the suspect in an alley where the suspect shot a deputy, according to KCSO. It is unclear on the extent of the deputy's injuries. The suspect was taken into custody in the 2900 block of Locust Street.
