BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — The husband of a woman found killed inside a home in Northwest Bakersfield has been charged with murder in her death.

On Wednesday, John Gardner, 64, was arrested for the murder of Jane Gardner, 58. Gardner was taken and booked into the Kern County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was charged and is due in court at 2 p.m.

"As the investigation progressed, probable cause was established, and that male subject identified as John Gardner, 64, was arrested for the murder of the woman located inside the residence," said Sgt. Robert Pair of the Bakersfield Police Department.

According to police, early Sunday morning, officers responded to the 7700 Block of Vaquero Avenue regarding a call to assist the Fire Department with an unknown situation.

Once officers arrived on the scene they received no response and forced entry into the residents to check the welfare of the occupants inside. Inside they found Jane Gardner dead from an apparent homicide.

Gardner was also on the scene. He was taken to the hospital for injuries following the incident.

He is due in court Friday.
