UPDATE (2 PM): The Bakersfield Police Department said a man armed with an AR-15 style rifle was arrested after he peacefully surrendered in East Bakersfield.

Officers talked to Enrique Cruz, 38, of Bakersfield, after responding to a ShotSpotter Activation and he fled into a home, said BPD.

BPD said officers determined an infant, who wasn't related to Cruz, was inside the home.

Negotiators were able to get Cruz to surrender peacefully and the infant was returned to their mother, said BPD.

Officers found bullet casings in the 100 block of Clyde Street and determined Cruz fired the rifle in the air, said BPD. No one was injured in the incident, according to BPD.

Cruz was arrested on suspicion of grossly negligent discharge of a firearm, child endangerment and other associated charges.

UPDATE (11:00 AM): Police officials say a ShotSpotter activation just before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning led officers to the 100 block of Clyde Street near MLK Blvd and East Brundage Lane.

ShotSpotter is gunshot detection technology that uses sophisticated acoustic sensors to detect, locate and alert law enforcement agencies and security personnel about illegal gunfire incidents in real-time. The digital alerts include a precise location on a map with corresponding data such as the address, number of rounds fired, type of gunfire, etc. delivered to any browser-enabled smartphone or mobile laptop device as well as police vehicle MDC or desktop.

The first officer contacted a man who was uncooperative and then retreated back into the home. Police were alerted that a small child was in the home.

The Bakersfield Police Department called for assistance, including negotiators and the SWAT team.

The suspect reportedly gave up peacefully and the child was taken into protective custody. No one was injured.
