Local Congressman and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is speaking out about the coronavirus and precautions everyone should be taking.

In a phone interview with 23ABC's Jessica Harrington, McCarthy said the city of Bakersfield and the county are doing a good job so far, but says the next 14 days are going to be critical.

"I think the steps we are taking are very smart. What the county has done, what the school districts have done, the medical facility -- preparing them, because it can change in one or two days very rapidly," said McCarthy.

Meanwhile, it was just announced Wednesday that Congress is seeing its first cases of coronavirus. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) announced he tested positive.

McCarthy said he found out about the positive test just a few hours earlier.

"I was not around him at the time he was contagious. There could be a couple of other members. They're being self-quarantined. We've had a staffer, we've had a senate staffer that are being tested. Just you see across this country. We're taking the same precautions that we're asking everyone else to take."

These were just a few of the topics McCarthy touched on in his interview. You can listen to the full interview above.
