SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KERO) — Governor Gavin Newsom created a new program to help hospitals needing more medical staff during the pandemic.

With the initial announcement of the program, 95,000 people volunteered but now only 14 volunteers are helping at hospitals.

According to Newsom, the program has been effective but very few volunteers met the rigorous qualifications from the state health corporations.

Other states have had similar difficulties. A researcher said many eligible volunteers may have found other jobs before the latest coronavirus surge.
