BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) — As the number of COVID-19 cases is beginning to decline from the recent surge, hospital officials say they've seen a bump in COVID-19 ICU patients needing ventilators.

Bruce Peters, president and CEO of Mercy Hospital, said that as of Wednesday morning 36 people were on ventilators. He said this is the highest number they've seen yet.

Over at Memorial Hospital, president and CEO Ken Keller said they have 67 COVID-19 patients. He said 13 of those patients are in the ICU and 9 are on ventilators.
