Over half of California's population is projected to be infected with the coronavirus, according to Governor Gavin Newsom.
In an emergency letter written to President Donald Trump Thursday, Newsom states "that roughly 56 percent of our population--25.5 million people--will be infected with the virus in an eight week period."
In the letter, Newsom requests that Trump "immediately deploy the USNS Mercy Hospital Ship be stationed at the port of Los Angeles through September 1, 2020."
Newsom also stated that California has been disproportionately impacted by repatriation efforts over the last couple of months.
