Gov. Gavin Newsom said COVID-19 hospitalizations across the state have increased by 43% over the last two weeks.

Gov. Newsom held a press conference Monday to give an update on the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the press briefing, he provided more details into the state's decision to close bars down again.

"We don't like the trend line and that's why this mandatory mask requirement is in effect and why we're using this dimmer switch to start to pull back."

The positivity rate for the proportion of people being tested that return a positive result for COVID-19 has gone up to 5.9% over the past seven days, compared to 4.4% just a couple weeks ago.

As a result, on Sunday Newsom ordered several counties: Kern, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Joaquin, Kings, Imperial and Tulare, to close bars. He also recommended eight other counties, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Stanislaus, also close down bars.
