DELANO, Calif. — The Delano Union School District voted Monday to approve 8th grade recognition ceremonies during the coronavirus. The ceremonies will be planned events adhering to social distancing and public health safety guidelines.
During the meeting the idea was presented to plan ceremonies for Pioneer School, Almond Tree Middle School, La Vina Middle School and Cecil Avenue Middle School on separate days during the week of May 26.
According to the presentation, the ceremonies could include drive thru celebrations, virtual recognition ceremonies, celebration photos on social media, and celebratory yard signs.
For drive thru celebrations, the board approved procedures such as maintaining physical distancing protocols, participants must remain in their vehicles, parents and graduated will be provided a schedule and map indicating a specified time and location for arrival, students will receive diplomas and celebrations bags from their teachers and district representatives will photograph graduates as they remain in their vehicles.
Although the measure was approved, some board members suggested the district coordinate with the Delano Police Department ahead of time to make sure traffic would not be impeded be any these ceremonies.
