Ethnic study classes will now be a graduation requirement in the California State University system. The requirement will kick in for the 2023-2024 school year.

The decision was made on Wednesday by the board of trustees. This marks the first change to the system's general education curriculum in more than 40 years.

The state legislature is also considering a bill with different rules for what is defined as ethnic studies that could overrule the decision made by the board.
