BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — California State University - Bakersfield has announced its first fall commencement in a decade.

According to school officials, the increasing number of graduates at the school has prompted the graduation ceremony. CSUB said there will be around 500 undergraduate students have registered to participate in the ceremony, as well as 53 master’s candidates.

In a statement, CSUB President, Dr. Lynnette Zelezny said:

“We’re fortunate that more and more students are graduating from CSUB and taking their talents and energy out into the local workforce. However, with more graduates, the ceremonies have become longer, which isn’t fair to the students or their families. We also have heard in recent years from students who earn their degrees in the fall that it is difficult to return months after leaving school to participate in Spring commencement, especially if they have new careers.”

The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11 at the Mechanics Bank Arena, Theater and Convention Center.

Below is a list of items CSUB has prohibited at the ceremony:

  • Purses, backpacks, bags
  • Umbrellas
  • Air horns
  • Signs
  • Balloons
  • Beach balls
  • Outside food (exceptions for infants, small children or individuals with medical needs)
  • Tripods
  • Alcohol
  • Glass bottles and cans
  • Fireworks
