BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield City School District has voted to postpone the school year to Aug. 24.
The BCSD held an emergency meeting Wednesday night to discuss the district's next steps following the failure to distribute hotspot devices so all students could have internet.
Their statement follows:
BCSD was fully prepared to begin the school year in a virtual format on August 17, 2020, but a delivery timeline for internet hotspot devices was not met by a well-known internet service provider. As BCSD is committed to ensuring equity, to make sure every student has the support they need to be successful, we cannot proceed with our current return to school schedule as we know there are students who will not be able to login to virtual learning on the first day of school without a hotspot. In an Emergency Board Meeting, the BCSD Board of Education voted to move the start of school to August 24, 2020.
