BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — On Saturday the Bakersfield community gathered for a good cause: JJ's Legacy at the 10th-anniversary gala dinner and golf tournament. The Light in the Darkness event celebrates the people who are registered organ donors.
Organizers say JJ's Legacy was created in memory of Jeffrey Johns whose passing led to other save lives saved from his donated organs. Now JJ's Legacy educates the community about being an organ donor and this event helps raise money to help the organization.
For the family of donors and recipients, this event means a lot to them.
"This is really important that everybody has the education about it," said Lori Malkin, JJ's Legacy founder. "And the need and importance of being a registered donor. When you go to the DMV, check yes at the DMV."
The golf tournament is Monday at the Seven Oaks Country Club. 23ABC's Mike Hart will be the emcee.
