A woman was found dead inside a truck that for unknown reasons had driven off the road and into a canal near McFarland Thursday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chevy or GMC truck was heading eastbound on Peterson Road, near Driver Road. CHP said the Kern County Fire Department was first on scene and recovered the woman's body from the truck. Life-saving measures were taken but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP said a local worker in the area was one to find the truck around 11 a.m. Thursday. The truck is still being removed from the canal, but the initial investigation appears to suggest the truck drove directly off the road into the canal.
The investigation is underway.
