The UFW’s 20th Constitutional Convention is bringing big names to town this weekend.
The convention kicked off tonight with a dinner to honor farm workers and had big name guests.
Actor Martin Sheen presented the keynote speaker Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of Robert Kennedy. Kennedy spoke about her father’s relationship with Cesar Chavez and about the importance of the work done in the late 1960s.
Martin Sheen said Chavez was one of his greatest heroes and said he was honored to be a part of the dinner.
UFW president Arturo Rodriguez said this weekend’s convention is about celebrating the organization’s accomplishments but also about continuing to fight for rights that some farm workers don’t fight.
The convention will host workshops all weekend. Governor Jerry Brown will speak on Saturday and former president Bill Clinton speaks on Sunday.
