Kern County Search and Rescue recovered the body of a 23-year-old man from Buena Vista Lake around 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Search and rescue crews received a call about a possible drowning shortly before 3 p.m.
The victim and his family went to Buena Vista Lake for a fun day on the water, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.
When the 23-year-old went into the water to retrieve his ball, he lost his balance and went under, KCSO said.
The victim's family tried to pull him out of the water but weren't able to, KCSO said.
Around 4 p.m. that the rescue had turned into a recovery, according to KCSO. After more than four hours, crews recovered the man's body.
The man's identity has not been released at this time.
