Search and rescue looking for 11-year-old girl in Kern Canyon

UPDATE (5:42 p.m.) -- An 11-year-old girl and her 57-year-old grandfather went missing in the Kern River at the Sandy Flat Campground in Keyesville around 12:50 p.m. Friday, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

KCSO said search and rescue crews were able to rescue the grandfather about 200-300 yards down the river.

Crews have not yet found the 11-year-old girl. 

The girl and her grandfather were playing on the rocks by the river, officials said. They did not have life vests on and officials said it is unclear if they knew how to swim.

Search and rescue crews are searching for an 11-year-old girl in the Kern River at Sandy Flat Campground near Keyesville.

The call came in at 12:56 p.m. that the girl was missing, officials said. The girl's grandfather went in the river to help and lost sight of her.

The grandfather was rescued, officials said.
