Pope Francis indirectly started a war of words with Donald Trump as he was leaving Mexico for the Vatican.

"A person who thinks only about building walls wherever they may be and not building bridges is not Christian," said Pope Francis.

While the pope didn't directly name Trump in his statement, Trump took issue with it.

"For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful," said Trump.

"I'm proud to be a Christian."

Trump took it a step further.

"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, I can promise you that the pope will have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president."

In Bakersfield, Monsignor Perry Kavookjian says that he doesn't believe the pope was calling out Trump's Christianity.

"I don't think the Pope is questioning Donald Trump's faith," Msgr. Perry said.

"I think what he is saying is anybody who in response to issues with immigration wants to build a wall, I mean honestly even the symbolism of that speaks to something that is contrary to the mandate of Christianity."

Msgr. Perry believes that the issue is not about Pope Francis vs. Donald Trump, but something larger.

"Maybe both men represent both sides, one is looking at the human person, the other one is looking at the law of the land."
