UPDATE (Oct. 17 8:48 p.m.): McFarland Police officers arrested a man Tuesday evening after a hazmat situation prompted evacuations.

MPD officers assisted Tulare County Probation with a search at a home on the 700 block of Kyra Avenue around 3:30 p.m. When officers arrived, MPD said a man was located and another man was found to be hiding in a closet.

There was a small fire and smoke in the bedroom, according to MPD. Officers smelled "unknown fumes" from inside and noticed unusual things in the home, MPD said.

Out of safety concerns, officers immediately left the home and evacuated nearby homes while KCFD and Public Health hazmat teams responded.

Officials found the unusual objects in the home to not be hazardous materials. McFarland resident Jose Saavedra was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance. Saavedra, 43, was later transported to Kern County Sheriff's Central Receiving Facility where he was booked in, MPD said.
