List of Memorial Day weekend events in town

Thursday, May 24:

  • Movie showing of "Unbroken: A World War II Story Honoring Our Veterans
    • Where: Beale Memorial Library
    • When: Thursday 3-7 p.m.
    • Children are welcome, crafts are available

Saturday, May 26:

  • Fifth Annual Presentation of Thousand Flags
    • Where: Park at River Walk
    • When: Display opens Saturday 11:30 a.m., National Anthem and raising of the entrance flag at 12 p.m.
    • Flag lowered at sunset, approximately 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
    • Flags flown through the weekend
    • Flag sponsorships are available at $50 per flag. Proceeds go to causes including Honor Flight Kern County, Wreaths Across America and other projects
  • Bakersfield National Cemetery to host ceremony
    • Where: Bakersfield National Cemetery on Bear Mountain Boulevard/SR-223
    • When: Saturday at 9 a.m. (expected to last 45 minutes)
    • Various speakers and musicians set to attend
  • Salute to Kern's Fallen Heroes
    • Where: Kern Veterans Memorial on Truxton Avenue and S Street
    • When: Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
    • Multiple speakers and presentations

Monday, May 28:

  • Fifth Annual Presentation of Thousand Flags
    • Where: Park at Riverwalk
    • Patriotic Fair featuring exhibitors and vendors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Ceremony and presentations 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    • Flag sponsors may collect flags and certificates 3:30 to 5 p.m.
  • United Veteran's of Kern County presents "Celebrating and Honoring"
    • Union Cemetery at 9 a.m.
    • Hillcrest Mortuary and Cemetery at 11 a.m.
    • Live music, balloon release, rifle salute, speakers, etc
