The Kern High School District has voted to adopt policies put forth by the state school board that allows students to use the bathroom with which they identify.

The vote was cast on Thursday and was 3 to 2 in favor. The new mandate comes as part of a nation-wide effort from the Obama Administration.

The approval of the policy is largely symbolic; since 2013, KHSD has been in accordance with a California law requiring public schools to allow students access to the bathroom they identify with.
