To mark the 70th anniversary of Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yeager’s legendary first supersonic flight on Oct. 14, 1947, Edwards Air Force Base is launching two formation flights which are scheduled to pass over Southern California schools October 13. 

 

The first formation – two F-16 Fighting Falcons, a B-1B Lancer and an F-18 Hornet from NASA – will fly on a route over the Antelope Valley and Bakersfield, California.

Both flights paths will be at an altitude low enough for easy viewing by the public, and will take place between noon and 1 p.m.

The flights are part of a two-day event -- an Edwards AFB Family Day Oct. 13 and the Run with History event Oct. 14 – that mark both the 70th anniversary of supersonic flight and the U.S. Air Force’s 70th Birthday.

At 11 a.m. Oct. 13, a ceremony will pay homage to the milestone flight made seven decades ago. Yeager is expected to be present during the event, and retired Brig. Gen. Robert Cardenas who flew the B-29 carried the X-1 will speak during the ceremony. Also (Astronaut from NASA).
